Employment of higher education graduates in Russia
2006
Given the influence of two trends (a transitional character and the influence of a knowledge-based economy), it is of interest to study what demands places the current labour market on higher education graduates. The main objective of our study is, therefore, to shed light on the two key questions:In the context of transitional economy influenced by the global move towards a knowledge-based society what demands face graduates while entering and operating on the labour market and what competencies are they required to possess? To what extent does Russian higher education prepare young people to face these demands? We will first describe global trends on graduate labour markets in Europe, aimi…

Contributions and limitations of self assessment of competences by higher education graduates
2009
This work presents a continuum of competence. On one extreme of which there is a subtlety of concept of competence. On the other, there are rigorous econometric analyses to find the answer to a critical question: ―to what extent is the assessment of competence reliable? ‖ Quest into the etymology helped us providing a rationale in favour of the preferred use of competence over competency. Moreover, we come to trace its roots in French literature where it was in use long before its emergence in English literature. We found that competences were common among various geopolitical locations and inferred that interest in competence has been internationalised realistically. Both English and Frenc…
Higher education graduates' employment and the uncertainty of working life.
2012
The aim of this chapter is to examine how the uncertainty and instability of working life is reflected in Finnish polytechnic graduates’ employment. The present study investigates the fields of business and engineering by comparing two graduate cohorts. The societal context in which new graduates enter working life is that of an increasing precariousness in the labour market, which affects higher education graduates as well as the general population. Nowadays, a higher education qualification is not necessarily a guaranteed path to a high income and high social status as it used to be. Insecurity and uncertainty in society and working life can be considered as general features of late moder…
Graduate employability in transitional economy
2008
08012 - 23 p.; This paper addresses higher education graduates' employability in Russia. We seek to find out what demands are placed on graduates by the modern labour market in Russia, in order to know how higher education should perform to prepare the employable professional. The transition from the communist economy to a labour market one generated important transformations on graduate labour market. A quasi-total abolition of the public regulating mechanisms in study to work transition, changes in social values and considerable mismatches between education and occupations bring about more demands for flexible workers. Under these circumstances, those graduates who acquired during their s…
Gender segregation in the employment of higher education graduates
2014
This article examines the employment and placement in the working life of Finnish higher education graduates (i.e. graduates from universities and polytechnics), focusing on gender equality. It reports a study on gender segregation in higher education and working life, considered in relation to Nordic gender equality policies. The data were gathered via a questionnaire administered to graduates in business and administration (n = 1067) and in technology (n = 1087), three years after their graduation. The results showed that men were able to secure permanent and full-time employment more often than women, and men achieved better correspondence between their degree and their employment. Howev…
